Excellent medical successes says The Health and Life Newspaper, MOH Vietnam

13 January 2012Success in lamellar keratoplasty: For the very first time in Vietnam, the Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty and Endothelium Keratoplasty (DSAEK) technique was carried out successfully on 7 patients by Surgeons in Department of Corneal and External Diseases, Vietnam National Institute of Ophthalmology, in 2011. In the past, these patients were operated by penetrating keratoplasty technique (PKP- the full corneal thickness is replaced by a good one). The disadvantages of PKP are open eye globe, high risk of rejection and shorter graft survival time. Lamellar keratoplasty technique (selected graft) reduces the disadvantages of PKP; visual acuity recovery is quicker and longer than PKP. Vietnam National Institute of Ophthalmology continues to complete this technique’s procedure, such as indication, surgery, postoperative care, follow-up). This procedure will be submitted to Ministry of Health to approve. After that, it can be applied in other hospitals countrywide.  (article in the special version on TET 2012, in The Health and Life newspaper, Ministry of Health, Vietnam)   Our country representative Vietnam, mr. Huynh Ba Huy, says: ‘’Thanks to the support from Eye Care Foundation the Vietnamese corneal surgeon, dr. Dong, was trained last year in Rotterdam Eye Hospital (The Netherlands) in this new technique DSAEK.’
